FREE Financial Health Clinic - Saturday, April 30th

In celebration of Financial Literacy and Education Month, the local chapter of the NC Bar Association, OnTrack Financial Education & Counseling, and the United Way of Asheville-Buncombe County are presenting a FREE Financial Health Clinic.  Our local event is part of a statewide initiative to provide free consumer information to the public.

What: Financial Health Clinic

When: Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 9:00am - 4:00pm

Where: United Way Building, 50 South French Broad Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801

Cost: The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

What: There will be a variety of ways for participants to gain helpful educational materials and useful information, including  financial seminars, free consultation with local bankruptcy, estate planning, tax and legal aid lawyers about a variety of issues including consumer rights and debt relief options, the opportunity to talk with CPAs and other financial professionals, and a variety of groups sharing resources through information booths (see below for a full listing of groups which are hosting these booths).  There will be information about the NC Foreclosure Prevention Loan Fund to help people struggling with unemployment or facing foreclosure. OnTrack Financial Education & Counseling will offer information on budgeting, credit empowerment and debt counseling.

9:30am – 10:30am: Learn About Reverse Mortgages - presented by OnTrack Financial Education & Counseling

11:00am – 12:00pm: What You Need to Know about Budgeting Basics and Understanding Credit Reports – presented by OnTrack Financial Education & Counseling

1:00pm – 2:00pm: Insurance and Risk Management as a Way to Build Financial Security– presented by Security State Farm

2:30pm – 3:30pm: NC Foreclosure Prevention Loan Fund – presented by OnTrack Financial Education & Counseling

Information Booth Representatives

  • Bankruptcy Attorneys – Representatives from the Local Bar will offer FREE consultations on consumer issues and general bankruptcy information.
  • Better Business Bureau - information on scams, fraud, and identity theft.
  • Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) Amanda Lyda & Jenny Hassler - general accounting information.
  • Green Opportunities, a community-based green collar job training and placement program, is seeking low income-residents of West Asheville and East Riverside to sign up to receive free weatherization services as a way for GO participants to receive hands on job training.
  • Internal Revenue Service - the  Stakeholder, Partnerships, Education and Communications program.
  • Legal Aid of North Carolina-information on employment law, benefits, and education law.
  • OnTrack Financial Education & Counseling -  information on credit counseling, financial education, and financial counseling programs.
  • Pisgah Legal Services - information on the Children’s Law Project, disability assistance, elder law, and homeless prevention.
  • Small Business Finances - Accountant Rob Putterman - general accounting information with an emphasis on small business issues.
  • State Employees’ Credit Union - information on membership-based banking and lending.
  • State Farm Insurance - information on how to utilize insurance and risk management as a way to build financial security.
  • United Way 2-1-1 - information on their free information line that links people to health and human services in Buncombe, Henderson, Madison and Transylvania counties.
  • Wells Fargo Community Development - financial education curriculum and Hands-on Banking.
